In April 1865, Confederates formed a defensive line along the high ground above Beech Creek to oppose Brig. Gen. Edward Potter's Federals advancing through Stateburg toward Camden. South Carolina militia, the 9th Kentucky Mounted Infantry, and the 1st Kentucky "Orphan" Brigade fought off repeated Federal attacks in almost daily fighting between April 11th and 15th. A full Federal assault on April 15th pushed the Confederates back but the line held, forcing Potter to bypass the position. He briefly occupied Camden, but returned on April 19th. The 25th Ohio Infantry, 157th New York Infantry, and 4th Massachusetts Cavalry charged across Beech Creek and drove the 53rd Alabama Partisan Rangers and 11th Georgia Cavalry from the line in the last action of the war in South Carolina.
