Van Riper State Park in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula spans about 1,100 acres in Michigamme and Champion townships, with frontage on Lake Michigamme and the Peshekee River that has long defined its character. Named for Dr. Paul Van Riper, a longtime local physician and political figure, it grew from land he helped secure for public use while serving on the Marquette County Board. Marquette County added a beach pavilion and changing house in 1924, and the property became a state park in 1956. Its lake and river setting continues to support swimming, picnicking, fishing, camping, cabins, and hiking trails.
