Mount Curwood, in Michigan’s Huron Mountains in L’Anse Township of the Upper Peninsula, rises 1,978 feet and has long figured in the dispute over the state’s true highest natural point. Named for author James Oliver Curwood, it was long considered Michigan’s highest summit until a 1982 survey using modern technology put nearby Mount Arvon one foot higher. That tiny difference sustained a rivalry between the two peaks. Surveys taken again in 2025 found Mount Curwood to be 0.4 feet higher than Mount Arvon, leaving it regarded as either Michigan’s highest or second-highest natural point depending on which measurements are followed.
