Craig Lake State Park in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula is a remote, backcountry landscape of 9,732 acres where some lakes are accessible only by foot or paddle. Once the private preserve of Frederick Miller of the Miller Brewing Company, it still contains cabins he built, and three lakes bear the names of his children: Teddy, Craig, and Claire. After his death in 1954, the state bought more than 2,000 acres from his estate in 1956, adding to nearby public land. Known for rugged recreation over developed facilities, the park offers trails, rustic camping, fishing, hunting, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling, and it expanded again in 2022 with a major wilderness land donation.
