Wellfleet Drive-In Theater in Wellfleet, Massachusetts, opened on July 3, 1957, and remains the only drive-in on Cape Cod. Over time it expanded beyond its outdoor screen into an entertainment complex with indoor cinemas, a flea market, miniature golf, and restaurants. The theater preserves a blend of older and newer moviegoing technology, offering both FM stereo sound and original window-mounted speakers, while its miniature golf course retains features from 1961. An indoor cinema was added in the 1980s as film distribution changes made first-run bookings harder for drive-ins. Still active in seasonal moviegoing and film festival use, it endures as a rare surviving example of a once-common American pastime.
