Snakeden Hollow State Fish and Wildlife Area is a 2,500-acre park and wildlife management area in Knox County, Illinois, shaped largely by water and by land reclaimed from surface mining. Its 125 impoundments cover about 400 acres, with Snakeden Hollow Lake comprising 160 acres, while most other lakes and ponds originated from mining operations. The result is a distinctive landscape of reclaimed water bodies, grassland, brushy draws, cropland, and limited hardwood forest. About 2,100 acres are managed as wildlife habitat, and the area supports diverse fish and wildlife, including a well-known nesting population of giant Canada geese, making it important for both recreation and conservation.
