Factory Butte is a 6,302-foot isolated butte in the Upper Blue Hills of northern Wayne County, Utah, near Hanksville and the edge of Capitol Reef National Park. Early settlers named it for a shape they thought resembled a huge factory building, especially the Provo woolen mill, giving this desert landform an unusual industrial name. Rising prominently above the San Rafael Desert, it has long served as a local landmark and a favored photography subject. The surrounding area includes protected cacti, seasonal wildflowers, and recreation lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management, but the butte's chief significance is its striking visual presence in central Utah.
