Originally begun in 1921, Wolverton Mill was part of an effort to realize dreams of an elusive Spanish gold mine said to be hidden high in the Henry Mountains. Its architect, builder, and operator, Edwin Thatcher Wolverton, believed he could find the legendary mine where others had failed. After waiting for the right opportunity, he did not begin construction until he was 60 years old. With the help of his two sons, he brought the project into being despite an old Indian medicine man's curse that great calamity would come to whoever reopened the workings. It is not known whether Wolverton ever found the lost mine, though he would sometimes come to town with a little gold. Whether or not his search succeeded, the mill stands as a distinctive testament to mining, perseverance, and ingenuity.
