During the winter of 1978-79, Keweenaw County established a new snowfall record with a seasonal total of 390.4 inches of snow, possibly a new record for the entire area east of the Rockies in the U.S.A. Monthly totals for that winter were 49.2 inches in November, 116.4 inches in December, 111.4 inches in January, 53.0 inches in February, 52.6 inches in March, and 7.8 inches in April.
