Large, attractive, vase-shaped mature elm trees once lined city streets throughout the eastern states. Elms were originally common trees of floodplains and lowland areas. Many Native American cultures used the bark of elm trees to cover their lodges and longhouses. The arrival of Dutch elm disease in the 1930s decimated elm trees nationwide. Today, elms are nowhere near as common as they once were.
