Ned Point Light, a historic lighthouse in Mattapoisett, Massachusetts, was built in 1838 for about $5,000 under local builder Leonard Hammond and named for farmer Ned Dexter. Constructed of locally gathered stone, it features 32 granite steps cantilevered into the outer wall without mortar. Its original birdcage-style lantern and 11 whale-oil lamps were replaced in 1857 by a fifth-order Fresnel lens and octagonal lantern. The keeper’s dwelling changed over time, especially after severe damage in the Great Blizzard of 1888. Deactivated in 1952, the light was modernized and reactivated in 1961, and it joined the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.
