David Kneeland, a major stockholder of the M and H Lumber Co., became its first general manager when the mill opened here in 1892 and also served as president of the Lewiston and Southwestern RR. Mill hands built this house for David Kneeland, and he and his wife Cornelia lived here with their three children until 1910. Their youngest son, James, died in a tragic accident after falling through the ice on East Twin Lake while ice skating. At the time, ownership of 500 shares of M and H Co. stock entitled a person to two lots in town and the naming of a street, which is how Kneeland Street received its name. On the lot just north lived Lewis Jensen, for whom the town of Lewiston was named, and the settlement was informally called Lewie's Town for many years. In 1910, after the pine timber cut was over and the mill largely closed, the Kneeland family moved back to Grayling, and George Sachs bought the house for $425; the Sachs family then lived there for three generations. Because this part of town escaped the destructive fires common nearer the mill, the house survived as one of the few original structures remaining. With power and water pumped from the mill, it had modern conveniences including electricity and the first kitchen sink with running water. In 1995, the Lewiston Historical Society was formed by 20 members who preserved pioneer family stories, historical objects, and documents of the founding and settlement of Lewiston. Through the efforts of early president Thelma King Sawyer, third-generation family members Sharyn Sachs Sivyer and Mike Sachs donated the Sachs house to hold the collection and serve as the permanent home of the Historical Society. Today the society has more than 100 members and has expanded to include additional collections and historical buildings, along with restoration of the CC Camp Lunden site, which features an in-ground scale model of the Great Lakes east of town.
