Francis Tillou Nicholls was a distinguished Confederate brigadier general who twice served as governor of Louisiana from 1877 to 1880 and from 1888 to 1892, and he was appointed Chief Justice of the Louisiana Supreme Court, serving from 1892 until 1911.
