The Mohican area is known not only for natural beauty but also for natural gas beneath the landscape. Mohican Memorial State Forest lies over Clinton Sandstone, a porous geologic formation about one half mile below the surface that originally held reserves of natural gas. That native supply was tapped in the early 1900s and provided the region with a clean-burning fuel supply for a generation. In 1937, after economically recoverable natural gas had been depleted, the formation was converted into a natural gas storage field for excess supplies piped in from other areas. Underground pipelines, wells, and related facilities pump gas into the field during summer and withdraw it during winter for transport to regional gas distribution companies. The local gas utility then delivers this domestic fuel to homes and businesses for heating, cooking, and industrial use. The Weaver Storage Field extends beneath about 68 square miles of Ashland, Knox, and Richland counties and can cycle 19 billion cubic feet of natural gas, enough to heat about 190,000 Ohio homes during a typical winter season.
