Palm Spring was a palm-studded desert resting place from 1826 to 1866 for Mexican pioneers, mountain men, the Army of the West, the Mormon Battalion, the Boundary Commission, Forty-Niners, the Railway Survey, Butterfield Overland Mail stages, and the California Legion. It was the site of the Butterfield Stage station built in 1858 by Warren F. Hall.
