Vallecito Stage Station was built in 1852 at the edge of the Great Colorado Desert and served as an important stop on the first official transcontinental route, including the San Diego-San Antonio ('Jackass') mail line from 1857 to 1859, the Butterfield Overland Stage Line, and the southern emigrant caravans. The existing structure is a reconstruction completed in 1934.
