Charles Coulson Rich, 1809-1893, was a pioneer builder of the West, a Major-General of the Nauvoo Legion, and an alderman of the City of Nauvoo in the time of Joseph Smith. He was a pioneer of Utah in 1847, chairman of the first committee to organize civil government in the Rocky Mountains, colonizer of San Bernadino Valley, California, in 1851, and first mayor of San Bernadino City. He served for many years as a member of the Utah Territorial Legislature and was a colonizer of Bear Lake Valley in 1863, where he lived and died. He was the husband of six wives and the father of fifty children, and was remembered as a friend of the Indians, a humanitarian, and an apostle of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for thirty-four years.
