William R. Richardson, a private in Company A, 2d Ohio Cavalry, was born in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1842, entered service at Washington, Ohio, and at Sailor's Creek in Amelia County, Virginia, on 6 April 1865, after being captured and taken to the rear, escaped, rejoined the Union lines, and furnished information of great importance about the enemy's position and the approaches to it; the citation was issued on 7 April 1866. At Sailor's Creek, nearly one fourth of the retreating Confederate army was cut off by Sheridan's Cavalry, and most surrendered, including Confederate generals Richard S. Ewell, Barton, Simms, Kershaw, Custis Lee, Dubose, Hunton, and Corse. The action was considered the death knell of the Confederate Army, and upon seeing the survivors streaming along the road, Lee exclaimed, "My God, has the army dissolved?" Richardson died on October 24, 1873, and was buried in Massillon, Ohio.
