Swaminarayan Akshardham in Robbinsville, New Jersey, was built by the BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha from 2015 to 2023 as the largest Hindu mandir in the Western Hemisphere and the second-largest in the world. Rooted in a vision set out in 1984 by Pramukh Swami Maharaj, it was created as both a North American place of worship and a site where visitors could encounter Hindu spirituality and architecture. Built according to ancient scriptures with stone sourced internationally and carved in Rajasthan, the complex features richly detailed domes, shrines, pillars, and sculptures. Its rise has also been shadowed by an ongoing labor dispute tied to its construction.
