Mount Hor rises in Sutton, Vermont, on the west side of Lake Willoughby, forming the western wall of Willoughby Notch, or Willoughby Gap. As part of the steep, enclosing landscape around the lake’s narrow valley, it stands out as a prominent feature of one of Vermont’s most distinctive mountain gaps. Trails in Willoughby State Forest make the mountain accessible and have made it a favored destination for views over the lake and notch. Mount Hor also holds a place in American literature as the subject of Robert Frost’s poem “The Mountain,” published in his 1914 collection North of Boston.
