Three miles west was the birthplace of Mentor Graham, 1800-86, "The Man Who Taught Lincoln." A teacher for sixty years, he lived in Green County from 1818-26. After Illinois voted down slavery, he moved to New Salem in 1826. There, from 1831-37, as tutor and friend, he had incalculable influence on Abraham Lincoln and his public life. Graham died at 86 in South Dakota and was re-buried at New Salem, Ill., in 1933.
