Stewart Peak is a 13,983-foot summit in the La Garita Mountains of Colorado’s San Juan range, within the La Garita Wilderness in Saguache County. Ranked 55th among Colorado’s highest mountains by most standard definitions, it is especially notable as the state’s second-highest thirteener, narrowly missing the 14,000-foot elevation that would make it a fourteener. Earlier measurements briefly placed it above that line, but later, more accurate surveys reduced its accepted height. Its first recorded ascent came on September 23, 1879, when Emmanuel Lee McNider’s U.S. government surveying party reached the summit, and its significance has since rested largely on Colorado mountaineering and precise modern measurement.
