San Luis Peak is a 14,020-foot mountain in Colorado’s San Juan Mountains, within the Rocky Mountains, standing in Gunnison National Forest’s La Garita Wilderness about 10 miles north of Creede. Farther east than the other San Juan fourteeners, it has a more isolated, backcountry character than many nearby high summits. Even so, it is regarded as a relatively straightforward climb, with two established routes: the Northeast Ridge from Stewart Creek Trailhead and the South Ridge from West Willow Creek Trailhead. As one of Colorado’s fourteeners, it draws hikers seeking high alpine terrain while remaining especially valued for its remoteness and quieter wilderness setting.
