Chippewa National Forest in north-central Minnesota spans 667,094 acres and contains an exceptional concentration of lakes, rivers, streams, and wetlands, giving it more lakes and wetlands than any other national forest in the United States. Created in 1902 as the Minnesota Forest Reserve on land set aside from several Chippewa reservations, it was re-established as the Minnesota National Forest in 1908 and renamed in 1928 to honor the Chippewa people. Its mixed forests, old-growth Lost Forty, abundant wildlife, and thousands of archaeological and historic sites make it significant both ecologically and culturally, while its trails, campgrounds, and scenic drives keep it a major recreation destination.
