The Chippewa National Forest Supervisor's Office is a log building constructed in 1936 by Civilian Conservation Corps Camp 705. Built from 100-year-old native red pine logged from Star Island and the Lake 13 area, the 8,500-square-foot structure contains 16,000 lineal feet of red pine logs, each 10 to 16 inches in diameter. Its 50-foot-high fireplace was made from 265 tons of split glacial boulders. Distinctive features include hand-hammered ironwork, maple stair rails, hand-hewn split-log stairs, and bird's-eye maple flooring. In 1976, the building was listed on the National Register of Historic Sites. Ike Boekenoogen, a master woodsman and the foreman for the project, taught the CCC boys to notch and groove each log by hand so the logs fit without chinking or nailing in true Finnish-style construction.
