Dr. Daniel Drake (1785-1852) came to May’s Lick with his parents at the age of two and described the area in Pioneer Life in Kentucky. After studying medicine with Dr. William Goforth of Cincinnati, he became the first resident doctor of May’s Lick. Drake later served as a professor at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, Louisville Medical Institute, and the medical department of Transylvania University. Known as the “Father of Medicine” in Cincinnati, he founded the Medical College of Ohio, the medical department of Cincinnati College, and the Cincinnati Eye Infirmary. He wrote more than 700 articles and books, and his Principal Diseases of the Interior Valley of North America became a medical classic. That 40-year collection of data was a monumental contribution to medical knowledge.
