Lake Hotel on Yellowstone Lake, also called Lake Yellowstone Hotel, opened in 1891 after years of delays caused by the site’s remoteness, shortages, fires, and administrative pressure. The oldest operating hotel in Yellowstone National Park, it began as a relatively plain three-story building but later gained its distinctive Colonial Revival appearance through major redesigns led by architect Robert Reamer beginning in 1903 and expanded again in 1928. Its broad Ionic porticoes set it apart from more rustic western park lodges. Later restorations updated the building while recovering historic features, and its significance to Yellowstone’s early tourism was recognized with National Historic Landmark status in 2015.
