A bridge was first built across the outlet of Yellowstone Lake in 1902, and by 1914 its official name was Fishing Bridge. The current bridge, with walkways, was built in 1937. It became a popular fishing spot for park visitors, but because it spans a gravelly river bed that forms an ideal cutthroat trout spawning area, fishing there removed the trout that could produce new generations needed to sustain the world’s largest remaining native cutthroat population. After fishing from the bridge stopped in 1973, pelicans, osprey, otters, eagles, and kingfishers returned and can often be seen feeding on the fish.
