Petersburg Mountain in New York's Catskill Mountains, southeast of Cobleskill, became notable for the fire lookout tower once standing on its summit. Built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1940 and first staffed in 1941, the steel tower saw observers report seven fires and log 223 visitors in its first year. As aerial fire detection became more common, the station's role faded, and it closed after the 1971 season. Schoharie County later adapted the structure for radio use by removing the cab and adding height for antennas before replacing it entirely. The original tower was sold and moved to West Hurley, and the summit site is closed to the public.
