In 1884, Joseph Cavagnaro built a shrine for Moccasin Creek pioneer Guiseppe Ferretti. Believed to be the only roadside shrine of its kind along Hwy. 49, it was reminiscent of those found along roadsides in Italy. Travelers stopped there to rest and meditate and to refresh themselves with cool spring water piped from a nearby spring. A niche was built to hold a statue of St. Joseph, but it remained empty over the years.
