Built about 1764 in Oldtown, Maryland, the Michael Cresap House was the frontier home of Captain Michael Cresap, an Ohio frontiersman who lived from 1742 to 1775 and became a well-known figure on the colonial frontier. This two-and-a-half-story stone-and-brick house is regarded as an authentic example of pre-Revolutionary building in Allegany County. Its significance rests not only in its close association with Cresap but also in its rare survival, recognized by its inclusion among only 100 structures in Colonial and Historical Homes of Maryland. Today it is preserved as a historic site and museum, linking Maryland to its frontier past.
