The old Natchez Trace was a 450-plus-mile footpath that ran through Natchez, Choctaw, and Chickasaw lands. The Natchez Trace National Scenic Trail consists of five separate sections totaling over 60 miles, including some segments of the original footpath. The Highland Rim section is 24 miles long and passes through some of the most scenic area of the Parkway, with trailheads at Garrison Creek, Old Trace, Burns Branch, Tennessee Valley Divide, Carter Road, Highway 7, and Highway 50 or Shady Grove; Garrison Creek is its northern terminus and Highway 50 or Shady Grove is its southern terminus. Horseback riding is allowed on many sections of the trail under specific regulations, while motorized vehicles and bicycles are prohibited, and a temporary reroute affects the section between milepost 423.9 and 425.4 because of Highway 840 construction.
