Tonque Pueblo is a large abandoned Pre-Columbian settlement in New Mexico near San Felipe Pueblo, built of adobe on the edge of Tonque Arroyo and likely supported by nearby water and fields for maize and beans. Occupied from the early 14th century to the mid-16th century, it reached about 1,500 to 2,000 rooms in a distinctive E-shaped layout and became a major center of ceramic production between about 1350 and 1450. Its finely made glaze-on-yellow pottery may have supplied up to one-third of such wares in the middle Rio Grande valley. The pueblo later declined for uncertain reasons and was further damaged in the 20th century by industrial activity and excavation.
