In 1776, Polly Daggett, Parnel Manter, and Maria Allen destroyed with powder a liberty pole erected near this spot to prevent its capture by the British. A replacement pole was erected in 1898 by the Sea-Coast Defence Chapter D.A.R., and in 1983 the citizens of Tisbury rededicated this liberty pole to patriotism on Memorial Day.
