On October 1, 2017, Stephen Paddock opened fire from two suites on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay hotel onto the Route 91 Harvest festival crowd at Las Vegas Village during the event’s final night. Firing more than 1,000 rounds over about ten minutes, he killed 60 people and wounded at least 413, while the total injured in the ensuing chaos rose to about 867. A hotel security guard, Jesus Campos, was wounded shortly before the attack, and police later found Paddock dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The massacre became the deadliest mass shooting in modern American history and intensified national debate over bump stocks and firearms policy.
