Blacktail Butte, a 7,688-foot butte on the floor of Jackson Hole in Grand Teton National Park, stands apart from the Teton crest as one of the valley’s most recognizable landmarks, offering wide views across Jackson Hole and toward the range. Originally called Upper Gros Ventre Butte in an early U.S. Geological Survey survey, it is now generally associated with black-tailed deer, though local lore ties the name to its dark, densely wooded slopes. Covered largely in mixed forest with rocky outcrops, it is both a prominent visual feature and an important wildlife corridor, especially for migrating elk, with Mormon Row at its base.
