Broadway around the Capitol Theater was home to a range of local businesses and media enterprises, including the Betsy Ross Tea Room at 16 Broadway, founded by Nick Orphan; Leeser's Shoe Store at 18 Broadway, established in 1940, with Francis "Doc" Leeser and his sons John and Ray; Lamprinos TV at Broadway and Elm, founded in 1954 by Gregory Lamprinos; and 1380 WMLP AM Radio, founded in 1955 and originally located on the second floor of the YMCA building, with DJs "JJ" Jim Jacobs, Paul Herbert, Bill Stutzaman, and Bob Michaels. Also nearby were the Broadway Hardware Store, founded in 1902 by W. H. Straub; Beachel’s Taxi Service, owned by Elston Beachel and located west of the Capitol; and the Coup Agency, founded in 1926 and at its present location since 1948, where founder Edward J. Coup, his son Robert, and Robert's sons Jeff and Rick were part of the family real estate and insurance business.
