Named for Benham (Bonum) Shaw, Shaw's Station was a pioneer settlement at the headwaters of Beaver Dam Creek in what is now Leitchfield and stood along an important trail running north from the settlements at Nashville, Tenn., to Louisville, Ky. Shaw was a pioneer in Severn's Valley about 1779, and a creek in present-day Elizabethtown also bears his name. Beaver Dam Creek Baptist Church, now known as First Baptist Church of Leitchfield, was constituted on May 29, 1804, became a member of the Salem Assoc., and later joined the Goshen Assoc. when it was formed in 1817. Pioneer Benham Shaw served as a deacon at Beaver Dam Creek Baptist Church.
