Built in 1908 on a prominent corner lot for blacksmith Chris Kolle and his wife Mary, this Craftsman style home features many characteristic elements of the design, including wide sheltering eaves meant to evoke coziness and security and a full-length front porch tucked beneath the main roofline to offer a connection to nature. In 1910, Chris employed four to six “scientific horseshoers and skilled wheelwrights and blacksmiths,” and like many blacksmiths, he shifted to automobile repair and sales as combustion engines began to replace horse power. John and Cornelia Sherman bought the residence in 1920, and in 1926 they hired Kalispell architect Fred Brinkman to remodel it by adding a fireplace, breakfast room, downstairs bathroom, and rear “service stairway to the basement.” John co-owned Flathead Motor Sales Company and, through the Roads and Highways committee of the Kalispell Chamber of Commerce, helped locate and develop western Montana highways. After John's death in 1941, Cornelia, a trained teacher, operated a home kindergarten, then took a district teaching job in 1943 and later became the Flathead County librarian.
