Mount Emily, in the Klamath Mountains of southwestern Oregon near Brookings, is remembered for a rare World War II attack on the U.S. mainland. On September 9, 1942, the Japanese submarine I-25 launched a Yokosuka E14Y seaplane near Cape Blanco, and pilot Nobuo Fujita dropped incendiary bombs there in an unsuccessful attempt to start a major forest fire. This raid made Mount Emily the second place in the continental United States bombed by an enemy aircraft during the war. The bombing location, called the Wheeler Ridge Japanese Bombing Site, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in July 2006.
