This valley and the pond at its bottom have existed since the retreat of the last ice sheet about 12,000 years ago. For centuries, Indian parties traveling across the state used it as a camping spot. Many artifacts and stone tools have been found in the area. It is also the subject of the Indian legend The Potawatomi Curtain. An 1817 map shows an Indian Trail around the pond.
