The Zekelman Holocaust Center in Farmington Hills, near Detroit, is Michigan’s largest Holocaust museum and was founded by Rabbi Charles H. Rosenzveig with members of Shaarit Haplaytah, a survivors’ organization. After nearly twenty years of planning and fundraising, it opened in 1984 and later moved to an expanded site designed to reflect the subject it presents. Its exhibits center on remembrance, survivor testimony, Jewish life before the Holocaust, and the rise of Nazi persecution, including an Eternal Flame, a memorial wall, and a World War II-era boxcar used in deportations. More than one million visitors have come for tours, education, archives, and exhibitions.
