Lyell Canyon is a broad sub-alpine meadow valley in Yosemite National Park, south of Tuolumne Meadows, with a long, relatively flat floor shaped by the Lyell Fork of the Tuolumne River. Rather than a narrow gorge, it is known for openness, easy views of surrounding Sierra Nevada peaks, a waterfall, seasonal wildflowers, and a well-known trail corridor used by both the John Muir Trail and the Pacific Crest Trail. The canyon rises southward toward Donohue Pass on Yosemite’s eastern boundary and, with nearby Mount Lyell, takes its name from geologist Charles Lyell, a friend of Charles Darwin.
