Mammoth Peak
Nature
Mammoth Peak rises in Yosemite National Park's Tuolumne Meadows at the north end of the Kuna Crest near California State Route 120, where its summit appears rounded and rocky from the road. Reached by a class 1 to 2 cross-country hike with river crossings and boulder scrambling rather than a formal trail, it is less visited than some nearby summits but remains a rewarding objective because of its relatively easy access and wide summit views toward Mount Gibbs, Mount Dana, and Mount Lewis. Geologically, it consists of Half Dome granodiorite in the Tuolumne batholith, formed deep within a magma chamber during the Late Cretaceous.
