A mile north on Little River, Josias Gamble built a fort in 1740. In 1790, Governor William Blount came here to pacify and disperse a gathering of settlers who were about to attack Indians to recover stolen horses. The fort was never attacked, but it was a frequent haven for Cove settlers during Indian attacks.
