John Lewis served as a Revolutionary soldier volunteer under Captain Marks of Charlottesville, Virginia. For part of his service he belonged to the regiment detailed as a bodyguard to General LaFayette. He fought in the principal battles in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Virginia, including Monmouth, Brandy Wine, Stony Point, and Germantown, and was present at the surrender of Lord Cornwallis at Yorktown. Ann Berry Earle Lewis, wife of Major John Lewis, was born in 1766 and died in 1845.
