Barnsley’s was a unique ante-bellum plantation established by Godfrey Barnsley in the 1850’s. On May 18, 1864, it served as the headquarters of Maj. Gen. J. B. McPherson of the U.S. forces. K. Garrard’s cavalry arrived via Hermitage at noon, and a detachment, Minty’s brigade, sent south toward Kingston was driven back by Ferguson’s Confederate cavalry. During fighting near the house, Col. R. G. Earle of the 2d Alabama cavalry was killed. McPherson and Logan’s 15th A.C. arrived in the evening, with Harrow’s 4th division camping on the plantation, and at midnight Dodge and the 16th A.C. camped nearby before these troops moved south on the 19th and camped on the Woolley plantation 2 miles west of Kingston.
