· Rancho del Sierra
History
5
Completed about 1864, this large Carpenter-Gothic style structure was the ranch home of Theodore and Maggie Winters and their seven children. The area had originally been settled by Mormons, and Winters and his brother purchased the ranch from Mormons with proceeds from the Comstock. Theodore Winters immediately set out to enlarge his property and built the mansion. At one time the ranch consisted of around 6,000 acres. Winters raised outstanding race horses and raced them there. He also operated a large dairy and raised beef cattle, work horses, and sheep. Theodore Winters was also active in politics and was elected territorial representative in 1862.
