Campbell County was formed in 1794 by legislative act from parts of Mason, Scott, and Harrison Counties in Kentucky. It was named for Col. John Campbell, a Revolutionary War officer and a Kentucky pioneer and statesman. Boone, Kenton, and parts of Pendleton and Bracken Counties were later taken from Campbell County. In 1796 the county seat was established at Newport, and in 1840 it was moved to Alexandria.
