Belchertown dedicated this soldiers memorial to those from the town who fought and died in the Rebellion from 1861 to 1865, to all soldiers then citizens of Belchertown, and to all from Belchertown who served in the Revolutionary War, in colonial wars, or in United States wars. It records living Belchertown soldiers of the War of the Rebellion in July 1884, names soldiers of the Revolution who died in service and those who survived their service, notes that fifty other known soldiers of the Revolution and those of the War of 1812 whose service was brief were not included for lack of space, lists the honored dead who went from Belchertown and fought in defense of liberty and their country, and names soldiers of the War of the Rebellion who were then citizens of Belchertown but had enlisted elsewhere.
